Subject description
In the Year 10 curriculum students explore systems at different scales and connect microscopic and macroscopic properties to explain phenomena. Students explore the biological, chemical, geological and physical evidence for different theories, such as the theories of natural selection and the Big Bang.
Students develop their understanding of atomic theory to understand relationships within the periodic table. They understand that motion and forces are related by applying physical laws. They learn about the relationships between aspects of the living, physical and chemical world that are applied to systems on a local and global scale and this enables them to predict how changes will affect equilibrium within these systems.
At Burpengary State Secondary College, we have divided Year 10 science into two different courses of study: Year 10 Applied Science and Year 10 General Science. Students will need to pick one or the other when making their subject selections for Year 10.
Year 10 General Science is suited to students who are interested in academic pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to tertiary studies and follows the Australian Curriculum.
This subject is a pre-requisite to selecting a senior science in Year 11 and 12 and the assessment mimics the senior syllabus.
| Year 10 Applied Science is suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education, training or work.
There are many practical based activities and real life applications of scientific concepts that follows the Australian Curriculum.

Skills developed
Information retrieval from listening, observing and research. Scientific reading and writing. Data representation and analysis.
Out of class requirements
It is expected that students will need to complete approximately 2 hours of homework/study each week.
Course Outline and Assessment
Term 1 Chemical science Students will examine the science of molecular structure which aids in the understanding of chemical reactions.
|
Term 2 Biological science Students will study evolution and how heritable characteristics involve DNA and genes.
|
Term 2 Physical science Students will examine energy transfers and transformations and how the motion of objects can be described and predicted using the laws of physics.
|
Term 4 Earth and space science Students will study the universe and global systems.
