Year 11 and 12 Music in Practice

​Subject Descript​​​ion

Music in Practice gives students opportunities to engage with music and music productions, and, where possible, interact with practising artists.​

Students are exposed to authentic music practices in which they learn to view the world from different perspectives, and experiment with different ways of sharing ideas and feelings. They gain confidence and self-esteem, and contribute to the social and cultural lives of their school and local community. They gain practical, technical and listening skills to communicate in and through their music. Students explore and engage with the core of music principles and practices as they create, perform, produce and respond to their own and others’ music works in class, school and community settings. ​

​Assessm​​ent

Schools devise assessments in Units 1 and 2 to suit their local context. In Units 3 and 4 students complete four summative assessments. The results from each of the assessments are added together to provide a subject score out of 100. Students will also receive an overall subject result (A–E).

For Music in Practice, assessment from Units 3 and 4 is used to determine the student’s exit result, and consists of four instruments, including: 

  • at least two projects, with at least one project arising from community connections
  • at least one performance, separate to an assessable component of a project 
  • at least one product (composition), separa​te to an assessable component of a project.​​
