Homestay

international students

What is Homestay?

One of the memorable aspects of study abroad is time spent with a local Australian homestay family.  Our international team has a group of committed homestay families who enjoy the cultural exchange that hosting international students has to offer.

Homestay families provide the opportunity for visiting students to practice their English conversational skills and learn about Australian culture in a secure and caring home environment. International students develop lasting friendships with their host families.

Homestay families are carefully selected by our Homestay Coordinator and support is given to both student and homestay families should any concerns arise.

For more information, please visit the EQI Website – Accommodation & Welfare.

What students can expect

Burpengary State Secondary College has a small, personalised international program of up to 20 international students.  International students who choose to study at Burpengary become part of an Australian homestay family and have the opportunity to integrate with local students and local culture.

Our homestay program provides students with comfortable accommodation with local people who enjoy the cultural exchange.  We look forward to you joining us.

Becoming a Homestay Family

Hosting an international student is a wonderful experience. Host families provide the opportunity for visiting students to practice their English conversational skills and learn about Australian culture in a secure and caring home environment. International students develop lasting friendships with their host families.

We have 2 types of students available to host:

Details about our program

  • Host Families are carefully chosen from the local community.
  • Host Families are committed to providing the best experience for the student.
  • Each member of the Homestay over the age of 18 must have current, active Blue Card (our Homestay Coordinator can assist you with completing these applications free of charge).
  • Host Families provide visiting students with:
    • their own room with study facilities (for ISP students); study tour students can share a room (with separate beds);
    • three meals each day plus snacks; and
    • access to transport to and from school and school-related activities
  • Host Families receive a small payment to cover additional costs.

Once you and your family have expressed interest in the Homestay program, you will need to go through an approval process. Each Homestay family is required to complete an Application form and also apply (or have) a Blue Cards for all members over the age of 18. Once we have received your application, our Homestay Coordinator will be in contact to organise a Homestay visit to insure your home is suitable.
